Werner Puschra

Dr. Werner Puschra, Executive Director of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Israel

Werner Puschra is the Executive Director of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Israel since August 2013. Before, he was the Executive Director of FES New York office since September 2008. The NY office serves as a liaison office to the UN, the World Bank, the IMF and the G20. An economist and political scientist by training he joined the FES in 1978 and worked for 7 years in the Department of Development Research dealing with Sub-Saharan-African economic and social policy issues. He was in charge of strategizing and implementing FES activities in South Africa and wrote his PhD dissertation on "Black Trade Unions in South Africa". From 1986 to 1990 he was resident director of the FES in Peru and from 1990 to 1994 he was representing the FES in South Korea. Between 1994 and 2000 he was posted in Egypt. From 2000 to 2008 he worked in FES Headquarters in Bonn and served first in the Middle East and North Africa department and from 2001-2008 as head of the Africa department. In 2009 he was appointed as member of the working group on the economic rationale for Shared Societies of the Club de Madrid and has become a regular contributor to the Shared Societies Project.
