Uri Zilbersheid

Uri Zilbersheid holds a PhD from the Goethe University in Frankfurt/M, Germany, in political philosophy. He teaches political philosophy at the School of Political Sciences, University of Haifa. He also teaches courses on the German political system and the European welfare state at the Center for German and European Studies at same university.

Dr. Zilbersheid has been studying socialist thought and practice for many years. Marx's teachings have been a major focus of his scientific research. He also has been studying the Israeli political system, mainly its social and economic dimensions. His book, Social Equality? Not in Our Constitution! (Hebrew), in which he discusses the Israeli constitutional law from a socioeconomic and political point of view, was published in 2015. The first volume of Karl Marx, Early Writings (Hebrew), of which Zilbersheid is the editor and co-translator, has just been published.

Zilbersheid suggests that the only workable alternative, which the Left can and should further, is the welfare state. Being a reform of capitalism - and only reforms of the current system can succeed - the welfare state should be enlarged and strengthened again after many years of its reduction across the world, even in its bastions in Western Europe.
